Year 2024 has been excellent growth season. Warm, sunny and just enough rainfall.

The challenge is Finland is not only the harsh winter temperatures but also the length of the growing season. 2024 was excellent in that regards, but this was not usual.

When selecting the variety, winter hardiness and early maturing are equally important. But with early maturity comes early bud break. And that makes the vines more vulnerable for spring frosts.
​
To help the new open root seedling kick start the growth, the use of growth bags is extremely beneficial. Provided one has a place like enclosed deck or some such for the month of May. The key here is the soil temperature in the growth bags. The young seedling develop roots and leaves in few weeks.
